Description

Utah Saints- TwoReview Debuting in the early '90s, the Utah Saints are best known for their remarkable ability to whip up a unique style of dance-floor magic. Their beloved early rave tunes utilized the elements of '80s synth pop, industrial and hip-hop, mainly in the form of an odd and eclectic assortment of samples that ranged from Kate Bush to the Eurythmics and Slayer. Ten years later, the Utah Saints return to the scene of the crime with a suitcase full of samples from Chrissie Hynde, Edwin Starr, Chuck D, Michael Stipe and even Metallica.Depending on what sort of mood you're in, this may just be "baggage" that should have been left behind. Determined to showcase their "all-star" cast of samples, the Saints' talent seems lost in the mix as they fall victim to their signature technique and sound. The listener is privy to marginal moments of clarity where new and exciting blends of house, techno, soul and indie pop shine through, but long-winded conversations with Michael Stipe infect the album and diminish any potential effect the production around it may have. Even though tracks like "Power to the Beats," with its Metallica guitar riff and Chuck D's choppy vocals, are destined to attract some passing attention, the risk is that the genius will be lost amidst the novelty and dreamy meditations and "Massive" and "Three Simple Words" won't get their due.
