Artists and causes don't always make great art but the two do come together with spectacular results on this, the first in a series of Red Hot AIDS Benefit albums first released in 1990 and in fact the launching pad for the mini-genre of theme albums devoted to George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Duke Ellington and other great songwriters. In fact, this eclectic mix of Cole Porter covers interpreted by a variety of contemporary artists unfurls a pretty ambitious agenda in addition to it's message of AIDS awareness and compassion. Porter's craft seems validated by the very flexibility of the original songs as they get retrofitted to encompass styles ranging from U2 and Tom Waits to Jungle Brothers, Debbie Harry and Iggy Pop and moments of stunning fusion (Sinéad O'Connor and Annie Lenox contribute especially memorable gems). Other highlights include David Byrne's 'Don't Fence Me In', K.D. Lang's 'So in Love' and the Neville Bothers' 'In the Still of the Night'.
