After severing ties with the Nation of Islam, Malcolm X knew he was a man with a mark on his head. Many believe Malcolm had premonitions of his death, but what really happened on the day he was assassinated? Writer-director Woodie King answers that question in this groundbreaking film blending staged reenactments with newsreel footage and eyewitness accounts from Ossie Davis, Yuri Kochiyama, and Amiri Baraka. The first film of its kind, Death of a Prophet is a lasting testament to Malcolm X's message of brotherhood and equality.
Death of a Prophet stars Morgan Freeman as Malcolm X, with Yolanda King as Betty Shabazz. The original music score is provided by legendary jazz drummer and composer Max Roach. Death of a Prophet was made years before Morgan Freeman made his breakthrough into major motion pictures with his Oscar-nominated role in Street Smart (1987). He received further Oscar nominations for Driving Miss Daisy (1989) and The Shawshank Redemption (1994), finally winning in 2005 for Million Dollar Baby. Writer-director Woodie King Jr. is founder of the New Federal Theatre in New York City, dedicated to bringing the enjoyment of live stage to minorities in the Lower East Side as well as in the greater Metropolitan area.
