Description

Titanic- A New MusicalAmazon.com Unlike the boat it's named after, this show truly rose from the bottom. Despite detractors predicting doom before it had even opened, Titanic overcame hectic previews and endless technical problems to win a Tony for best musical and turn into a commercial success. Despite the fact that favorite performers like Judith Blazer or Victoria Clark disappear in the crowd and don't get solos of note, the show still manages to bring to life affecting characters. Maury Yeston's (Grand Hotel) score has the required majesty without ever being turgid, and the choral work he coaxes from his ensemble is eminently powerful. Though it requires a fair amount of attention on the listener's part, Titanic is also surprisingly emotional--its majestic finale packs more punch than 3 hours of Leonardo DiCaprio. --Elisabeth Vincentelli Product Description A musical with a large cast of performers, Titanic celebrated the sinking of the fabled luxury liner, which disappeared on its maiden voyage after hitting an iceberg on April 14, 1912. With a book by Peter Stone and a score by Maury Yeston, the musical presented some of the ill-fated passengers – the well-heeled ones in First Class, those in Second Class dreaming of sharing the lifestyle of the privileged; and those in Third Class hoping for a better life in America, the ship’s final destination. Among the many participants in the show were Brian d’Arcy James, Judith Blazer, Michael Cerveris, John Cunningham, and Matthew Sklar. The show, which had been plagued with problems during its tryout period, opened to rave reviews on April 23, 1997, at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, and closed two years later after playing 804 performances. It won the Tony for Best Musical that year, as well as one each for its book, its score, Stewart Laing’s scenic design, and Jonathan Tunick’s orchestrations.
